The Function of a Canary

A warrant canary is a simple concept. You cannot legally compel someone to speak if a court issues a gag entry. You can, however, compel them to stay silent. The canary flips this dynamic. A text file saying "we are safe" is useless. Anyone with server access can edit a text file. Law enforcement certainly would. This is why the canary must be a clearsigned PGP message. The signature proves that whoever holds the private key authorized the message.

DrugHub forces PGP-required messaging across the entire platform. If you want to communicate with any of the 1.2k vendors currently active, you encrypt your traffic. The market operators hold themselves to the same standard. The canary acts as a cryptographic proof of life.

To prevent replay attacks—where an adversary simply copies an old canary and updates the date text—the canary must include external proof of time. Usually, this means embedding the latest Bitcoin or Monero block hash. You cannot pre-generate a signature for a block that has not been mined yet. The block hash proves the signature is fresh.

Verification Walkthrough

  • Obtain the public key

    Download the operator's public key from a trusted source. You should already have this saved from your initial account creation. Import it into your local keychain.

  • Download the signed message

    Navigate to the canary page on the market. Copy the entire clearsigned block, including the -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- and -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- headers. Save this to a local text file.

  • Execute the verification

They can coordinate off-site, sign the transaction together, and release the funds, bypassing the market operator entirely.
